A couple of upcoming events at the Birth Centre to mention:

Baby Talk!

How, when, and what your baby learns about language (and why maternal speech is so important)

Time: Wednesday, December 11th, 2013, 6 – 7 pm
Location: The Birth Centre, 603 St. Mary’s Road

  • Do you wonder whether your baby understands you when you talk?
  • Do you worry about whether your baby is meeting language milestones?
  • Are you curious about what to expect as your child learns to speak?
  • Have you wondered why we speak in a funny voice when we talk to babies and young children?

Bring your baby to a free interactive workshop with Dr. Melanie Soderstrom, Associate Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of Manitoba, and Director of the Baby Language Lab, and learn about how language develops in infants in the first year of life.  Contact M_Soderstrom@umanitoba.ca for more information. RSVPs appreciated – walk-ins welcome.”

Baby Butz in the News

There’s a nice article on local mother and businesswoman Majda Ficko and the story behind her hit diaper cream, Baby Butz, in the most recent edition of the Herald. Ficko ‘s son has a developmental disorder and wears diapers all the time. After struggling to find a commercial product that would prevent or treat diaper rash, Ficko worked with a chemist to create a natural, effective cream that has become a hit among parents and medical professionals across Canada. It can be purchased at Sobeys, Safeway, Winners, Shoppers, and soon, Superstore, as well as many smaller children’s and baby stores.

See the article: All-natural soothing cream hitting store shelves and babybutz.com for more info.

New Winnipeg Boutique: Bump Maternity

I had a nice email from Diane Marius, owner of the very recently opened Winnipeg boutique, Bump Maternity!

The Academy Road store carries a variety of maternity and nursing fashions from casual to formal. Brands carried include: Isabella Oliver, Queen Mum, Seraphine (same brand as the Duchess of Cambridge wore in her first official photos with Prince George!!), Boob, Maternal America, Lilac, Mothers en Vogue, Belabumbum, Cake Lingerie, Matt & Nat, Babymel, and Storksak. Winnipeg mamas will be glad to know she also carries maternity winter coats!

The store also carries some baby items, including layette, blankets and bibs, and Trumpette socks. Sleepers and sleep gowns will be available shortly as well.

Bump carries skin care products, lotions, diaper rash cream, Belly Jelly, etc, as well as sleep bras, and will have some pyjamas, robes, and other lingerie shortly.

I’m super psyched to check out her store as it is nearly impossible to find any nice nursing apparel in Winnipeg, and it will be great to have more options for maternity wear, beyond the usual big box stores. Congratulations, Diane, and best wishes for a very successful business!
